Admission Requirements

We take applications for admission to Washington University very seriously. We review and assess each application individually and personally.

Students who attend Washington University Engineering can see the connection between studying engineering and benefitting society, and they can see that the excitement in engineering studies is at the interfaces between engineering and other disciplines. Today's engineering student is an innovative thinker, often with an entrepreneurial bent, and has leadership and people skills.

Today's engineering student wants to pursue the study of language and study abroad. Today's student wants to work alongside faculty on research and wants to pursue a minor in a different field. And today's student wants to be engaged in internship or co-op and wants to be engaged in community service.

Students who come to Washington University have challenged themselves academically and personally during their high school years.

Most candidates' transcripts include:

  • Four years of English
  • Four years of mathematics (the Engineering School recommends calculus)
  • Three to four years of history & social science
  • Three to four years of laboratory science (the Engineering School recommends biology, chemistry, and physics)
  • At least two years of a foreign language

Senior-year transcript should show strong academic success in demanding courses. Most applicants take advantage of honors, advanced placement and international baccalaureate courses - if offered by their high schools. We also take into consideration standardized testing, letters of recommendation, extracurricular activities and an essay.
